Chinese Progressive Association

Building Collective Power in Low-Income Immigrant Communities

CPA is a 36-year old membership-based organization, which educates and organizes the low income and working class immigrant Chinese community in San Francisco to build collective power with other oppressed communities to demand better living and working conditions and justice for all people.

CPA is a multi-issue organization that addresses the inter-related problems and needs of their constituents in a holistic way.  Their current organizational prioritization of employment, housing and community health issues reflects their assessment and analysis of the social justice concerns of their members and of existing opporutnities for progressive organizing, leadership development and alliance building work.

CPA believes in the power of marginalized community members coming together to create solutions to their problems. With its strong community track record, CPA is strategically positioned to build from their successes and build a long-term movement supporting low-income immigrant families to achieve economic justice and self-sufficiency and fully participate in civic life.

"With the Chinese Progressive Association's legacy of organizing in the poor and working class Chinese immigrant community, we see great opportunities in this political moment to build stronger organization and develop a new generation of leadership and activism. We are happy to be a part of NGEC's Organizational Fellowship Program because it is an unique program for Asian and Pacific Islander grassroots organizations to exchange and build a more creative, powerful, and strategic movement." - Alex T. Tom, CPA Co-Director
